¶ Het gebruik om iemand mild te stemmen met een goede gave is van alle tijden. Wat de één profijt brengt, kan de ander tot voordeel strekken. Stadsbesturen realiseerden zich dat ook. Bezochten in vroeger eeuwen belangrijke lieden met invloed op de landsheer of de handelsbetrekkingen een stad, dan was het zaak hen met alle egards te omringen. In de tijd van de gilden, van late middeleeuwen tot aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw, beschikte veel stadsbesturen over tinnen kannen, die gevuld met wijn, werden bezorgd bij de gelegenheden waar een invloedrijk iemand, al dan niet met gevolg, aanwezig was. In dit rijk geïllustreerde boek wordt het ontstaan en de productie van deze kannen in de Noordelijke en Zuidelijke Nederlanden beschreven. Ook aan de herkomst van de wijnen wordt aandacht besteed. Vervolgens worden per stad de tinnen kannen besproken, met veel aandacht voor de details, stijlen, dateringen en merken.
